Coffee House to Go's Across the Mic - March 21, 2008 - Ellaraine Lockie

Episode #4 - Ellaraine Lockie

This is our podcast featuring discussions with upcoming and notable figures in the small press community including printers, publishers, bloggers and, of course, poets and writers.

In this episode, Mike speaks with poet Ellaraine Lockie.

Ellaraine's first love in literature is poetry, but she is also an avid traveler, essayist, workshop instructor and nonfiction book author. In addition to numerous awards and nominations for her writing, Ellaraine shares her love of the craft with up and coming poets through her work as a judge and sponsor of poetry contests, participation in mentoring programs, and through teaching workshops on poetry and the creative process in libraries, schools, community programs and writing groups.

Ellaraine's work can be found through a number of resellers and publishers:

non-fiction
All Because of a Button: Folklore, Fact and Fiction (Amazon Link)
The Gourmet Paper Maker (Amazon Link)

poetry
Finishing Lines - (Snark Publishing)
Blue Ribbons at the Country Fair - (PWJ Press)
Bear's Paw Poems - (SCW Publications)

The following titles are out of print, but can still be found on the Internet through select resellers:
Midlife Muse (Poetry Forum)
Coloring Outside the Lines (Plowman Press)
Crossing the Center Line (Sweet Annie Press)

(This interview was originally recorded as a Skype to landline call in February 2007.)

Producer's Note: You may notice the episode numbering is out of sequence. Recorded over a year ago, this discussion with Ellaraine Lockie was intended to be released as episode 4 of Across the Mic shortly after it was conducted. When Jack Hosley of Wander Radio offered an interview for the show in January, I jumped at the chance to bring it to you, but decided that, out of respect for Ellaraine, I would release the interview with Nathan Lowell as episode 5.

ESC! Magazine Spring 2007 (V11N1) - Podcast Edition

Thanks for subscribing to our show, Coffee House to Go! In the feed this week you'll find a special Podcast Edition of the Spring 2007 issue of ESC! Magazine.

All that's old is new again this issue thanks to the addition of Charles Ries as our Poetry Editor. Charles worked hard to present you with a fresh selection of poets both new and familiar this issue, including works by G. Scott Hughes, John Grey, E.V. Noechel, Ellaraine Lockie and Sharmagne Leland-St. John.

Co-host of our podcast, Coffee House to Go, LB Sedlacek kicks off the short fiction with her piece, "The Echo of Lima Beans". Reader favorite Bob Potocki contributes his story, "Remembrance" followed by Jonathan Scott's "Reception". I'm also proud to present the continuation of Angela Mankiewicz's short, "Laura Hanson's 1990".

With us since the beginning, Paul Tucker continues his illustrated story "Vex" on page 25 and Jonathan Scott's illustrations can be found within his own short story as well as this issue's cover.

In our Reading Lounge, Poetry Editor Charles Ries contributes a new chapbook review as well as an interview with author Michael Graves.

CHTG: Writing News

First Annual WordLife Essay Contest sponsored by Urban Echoes Entertainment, LLC.
The contest is designed to spur original thought among today's youth, inviting them to consider the most pressing issues confronting their generation and transform their thoughts on those issues into action - thus bringing words to life.

Award Amounts: First Place – $200, iPod nano, & Publication
Second Place – $100 gift card to EB Games & Publication
Third Place – $50 gift card to Best Buy & Publication

This Year's Topic: "Who's Pimpin' My Generation...?"

Gangsters, pimps, hustlers, half-naked women – the images are all familiar. TV shows, movies, videos, video games – we’ve all seen how these representations of minority life and culture are celebrated in the media, but now the issue has gotten much more serious...with the
growing popularity of "Gangsta Parties" being held on college campuses across the country, these images have taken a turn for the worse, and are now being turned on those they supposedly represent. The real questions now are: who is responsible for the creation and
proliferation of these images? Are they exaggerated images that perpetuate age-old stereotypes, or do they really reflect a deeper reality?

Tell us your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop imagery – specifically addressing the following points:

- Who/Where does it really come from?
- How does it affect you personally?
- How does it reflect your generation in the eyes of overall society?
- How can the current tide of negative imagery be turned in a more
positive direction?

Contest open to 9th through 12th grade matriculated and home-schooled students who are U.S. citizens. Entry fee: $5. All essays must be the original sole work of the entrant. All essays must be postmarked no later than Friday, May 25th. Winners will be notified by no later than
Friday, July 13th.

Winners will be announced in July via nationwide press release, on Urban Echoes's website, and in Urban Echoes's quarterly newsletter. Urban Echoes will also make special announcements for school-wide distribution at winners' respective schools. Winners available by SASE if provided. All winners will receive a specially framed certificate, and all winning entries will be published on Urban Echoes's website, in Urban Echoes's quarterly newsletter, and in winners' respective local newspapers.

For more info, please visit www.UrbanEchoes.net or contact Info@UrbanEchoes.net.

and has put together a unique collection of 22 poems.

From the poem "the Bump":
"the inevitable Bump of people /
the body chase /
no way to know /
who you will end up loving, hating, /
living with, //

each encounter a chance /
quick summaries /
and thoughtless calculation, /
friend or foe in a moment, /
a week or month later//"

From the poem "the fire witch":
"I look into the fires, I see myself /
in the flame arms that dance /
so seductively."
