Ellaraine's first love in literature is poetry, but she is also an avid traveler, essayist, workshop instructor and nonfiction book author. In addition to numerous awards and nominations for her writing, Ellaraine shares her love of the craft with up and coming poets through her work as a judge and sponsor of poetry contests, participation in mentoring programs, and through teaching workshops on poetry and the creative process in libraries, schools, community programs and writing groups.

All that's old is new again this issue thanks to the addition of Charles Ries as our Poetry Editor. Charles worked hard to present you with a fresh selection of poets both new and familiar this issue, including works by G. Scott Hughes, John Grey, E.V. Noechel, Ellaraine Lockie and Sharmagne Leland-St. John.

Co-host of our podcast, Coffee House to Go, LB Sedlacek kicks off the short fiction with her piece, "The Echo of Lima Beans". Reader favorite Bob Potocki contributes his story, "Remembrance" followed by Jonathan Scott's "Reception". I'm also proud to present the continuation of Angela Mankiewicz's short, "Laura Hanson's 1990".

With us since the beginning, Paul Tucker continues his illustrated story "Vex" on page 25 and Jonathan Scott's illustrations can be found within his own short story as well as this issue's cover.

In our Reading Lounge, Poetry Editor Charles Ries contributes a new chapbook review as well as an interview with author Michael Graves.

Open to all. Poems, any subject and style, up to 20 lines. Previously unpublished and the work of the author. Deadline for entries: 31 May 2007. Entry fee £1 per poem. Prize £50. Winning poem published on website. Copyright remains with author.

RULES

The competition is open to all.

Poems should not exceed 20 lines, should be in English and on any subject, and in either rhyming or free verse.

Poems should be the original work of the author and not previously published -copyright remains with the author.

The winning poem will be published on the website.

Entries cannot be returned under any circumstances so keep a copy.

Judge's decision is final. No correspondence will be entered into.

FORMAT
Entries typed on one side of A4 paper but should not include the name of the author. Name and address (and email if possible) of the author, together with the title of the poem submitted should be enclosed on a separate sheet of paper.

FEE

This Year's Topic: "Who's Pimpin' My Generation...?"

Gangsters, pimps, hustlers, half-naked women – the images are all familiar. TV shows, movies, videos, video games – we’ve all seen how these representations of minority life and culture are celebrated in the media, but now the issue has gotten much more serious...with the
growing popularity of "Gangsta Parties" being held on college campuses across the country, these images have taken a turn for the worse, and are now being turned on those they supposedly represent. The real questions now are: who is responsible for the creation and
proliferation of these images? Are they exaggerated images that perpetuate age-old stereotypes, or do they really reflect a deeper reality?

Tell us your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop imagery – specifically addressing the following points:

- Who/Where does it really come from?
- How does it affect you personally?
- How does it reflect your generation in the eyes of overall society?
- How can the current tide of negative imagery be turned in a more
positive direction?

Contest open to 9th through 12th grade matriculated and home-schooled students who are U.S. citizens. Entry fee: $5. All essays must be the original sole work of the entrant. All essays must be postmarked no later than Friday, May 25th. Winners will be notified by no later than
Friday, July 13th.

Winners will be announced in July via nationwide press release, on Urban Echoes's website, and in Urban Echoes's quarterly newsletter. Take Note: It's Coffee House to Go!

Today was deadline day for ESC! Magazine. Always released in April and October, I was under the gun to get the latest issue complete and posted online before the clock chimed 12 -- lest I miss a release month for the first time since becoming a hybrid journal.

Throughout the day, however, I noticed a large number of comments on THIS blog. Much higher than I've ever gotten during a single afternoon in the past. It was curious, but since I was scrambling to complete ESC!, I was not able to take the time to think about why that might be other than perhaps someone linked to me from their blog.

By late afternoon I had finished ESC! (Not at ALL during the time I was supposed to be working for my paying job. Nope. Not at all...) and bopped over to Blogger.com to post about it while I made final revisions when I noticed on the home page of Blogger.com that the "Blog of Note" for the day was Getting a Leg Up. Getting a Leg Up for those who don't know is the blog for the Podcast of the same name, a Podcast produced in Taiwan by my good friend and 'Casting buddy Mark Forman. Mark founded the Disembodied Podcast Group of which Coffee House to Go is a member.

Anyway, I thought this was pretty cool, so I Skyped him to let him know:

CHTG – 14:42 – FYI: Went to blogger to log in today and GLU was listed as "Blogs of Note"

Fortunately, Skype allows for messages to go through to offline users so it's not unusual for us to have asynchronous conversations ... him being in Taiwan and all. So I went off and spent the evening dispensing candy to the goblins and ghouls of the neighborhood.

"Trick or Treat! Well, mostly treat..."

"Okay, here ya go ... wait. Mostly treat?? Not sure I like the sound of that."

"Well, maybe if you handed out full sized candy bars."

Bold little cusses ain't they?

So I'm off to bed when I see that Mark replied to my earlier message:

GLU – 21:15 – No shit

GLU – 21:15 – I mean no shit? Not no shit!

GLU – 21:20 – How weird is that that you're right below me? I never notice that section.

A brief asynchronous moment later, a confused Mike responds:

CHTG – 23:15 – Did CHTG show up on blogs of note?

GLU – 23:16 – You're fucking with me now - it was right below mine

GLU – 23:16 – go figure the odds on that

GLU – 23:17 – Are you pulling my Legup or what? (Okay, I laughed at that. I like a good pun.)

Now remember, I'm still looking at the home page. There's only one listed there at a time. So I clicked one of the clicky-arrows and saw "Coffee House to Go."

CHTG – 23:17 – That's weird. I just pulled it up and saw that. I didn't click any of the arrows before.

Again, you have to note that I'm thick enough to not have realized that we're looking at two different listings of the Blogs of Note.

GLU – 23:17 – What are the odds of something like that happening especially right next to each other

GLU – 23:18 – Freaky

CHTG – 23:18 – Pretty cool!

GLU – 23:18 – Yeah

So there it is. Coffee House to Go made the Blogger.com Blogs of Note!! That is really freakin' cool and ... slightly embarrassing since I haven't really posted anything on here since the last Podcast. So here you go, a little Coffee House to Go news until I can finish up the next 'cast this week.

Virtual Coffee House

In the past few months I've been putting together a plan to offer a new way of spreading the works of ESC! Magazine's contributors to a broader audience. Read on to learn how you can participate!

Introducing "Coffee House to Go."

What is Coffee House to Go? CHTG, an ESC!Cast produced and hosted by the publisher of ESC! Magazine, will be a monthly Podcast of poetry and short fiction read by the original authors, interviews with folks active in the small press community, news from the world of independent literature, audioblogs and, since it's an audio broadcast, a featured song or two from unsigned bands. I expect the length of the shows will vary quite a lot depending on the content, but most shows will be about 20 – 40 minutes long.

In addition to exposing your work to all of our listeners through the show, each Podcast will include (through online shownotes at our website or as part of the show itself) the information needed for listeners to order your poetry, book or CD. So, as a contributor to the Podcast, your work will not only be exposed through your performance but potentially through sales of your small press endeavor as well.

"Umm, excuse me but ... Podcast?? ... Podcasting??"

Podcasting derives its name from the combination of "iPod" and "broadcast" – though a common misconception is that you need an iPod to listen to it. You don't. Podcasts are typically released in the widely used MP3 format which is supported by a wide range of listening devices including many car and home audio systems. I guess a great way to describe a Podcast is to say it's the online equivalent of a radio broadcast – stored at our site for you to “subscribe” to and automatically download on your own schedule. Once downloaded, Podcasts are available for you to listen to at your convenience.

By subscribing to Coffee House to Go and other Podcasts using a program like iPodder or iPodderX, you literally become your own program director!

I've listened to Podcasts covering a wide range of topics from Disney to wine vintages to techie geek shows (okay, mostly techie geek shows). As for literature, I've found Podcasts devoted to science fiction and fantasy as well as a very small handful of Podcasts covering poetry. What I have not found, however, is a Podcast devoted to the broad range of general fiction and poetry that ESC! Magazine publishes.

Ramping Up

As part of getting ready for our first Podcast, I've registered both COFFEEHOUSETOGO.COM and ESCCAST.COM. CoffeeHouseToGo.com will take you to where you need to go to subscribe and listen to our show as well as share all the latest information about the show.

At ESCCast.com, blog entries will cover the software you'll need to listen to our broadcasts, how to "subscribe" to our site feeds, as well as the best way to record and submit your work to Coffee House To Go.

Becoming a regular contributor to the ESC!Cast blog is easy! Drop me a line with your ideas, articles or other content you think might benefit the Coffee House to Go listeners along with a writing sample and we'll talk.

How To Make Your Content ESC!Cast Friendly?

If you'd like to participate in the Coffee House to Go ESC!Cast, I would love to hear from you! If you've already got a handle on making recordings using your computer and would like to start submitting your work, please feel free to send me your recordings now.

To make the start up of this effort as seamless as possible, I would prefer you make a digtital recording of your work and e-mail it to me in MP3 format (128kbps or higher quality please) or send it to me on CD. I will consider audio tapes as well, but will try my hardest to avoid them at the outset. While there are exceptions to every rule, when faced with works of equal quality, the decision of whether to include a piece that will take just a little effort to use (MP3) or to include a piece that would require an analog to digital conversion before I can use it (tape), I will go with the electronic one every time.

Recordings should be no longer than 10 – 15 minutes. What this means is in most cases you're not going to be able to send me your entire short story. If you can, great! Otherwise plan to excerpt your favorite section from the story and be sure to let me know where people can get the rest if they're interested. If you'd like to serialize it, be sure to divide it so there is a natural break between the installments and I'll run it over a number of Podcasts.

To most effectively promote your chapbook, book or CD, I recommend you make it available to order through the Internet. In general, people are much more likely to make an impulse purchase if they can do it right away rather than having to put the order together in an envelope, stamp it and mail it off to some unknown address. I know I'm that way ... how about you?
